It’s Time for Back to School!

August 11, 2015

Time to think about back to school safety.

Summer is just about over and it’s time to think about going back to school. New clothes, new shoes, new classes and new friends. It’s time to think about back to school safety.  Time to share the road again with school buses, kids walking and biking to and from school. A time to be more alert!

Here are some back to school safety reminders…

  • Back to School SafetySpeed Limit – The speed limit in a school zone is 25mph.
  • School Buses – When a school bus stops to load or unload and its red lights are flashing, regardless of the direction the driver is going, all vehicles in both directions must STOP.
  • Driveways – Enter and exit driveways carefully and slowly.
  • Distractions – Reduce distractions when driving. Don’t be distracted by your cell phone – no text or talk while driving.
  • Be AwareTake an extra time and watch for children who may be trying to cross the street.

Parents and caretakers are often in a hurry or distracted when dropping kids off or picking them up from school. Maybe your late for work or that after school ball game. Being in a hurry or distracted can be unsafe for you and the kids who may be walking, bicycling or running to get on the bus.

Teach your kids back to school safety…

  • Crossing the street – Only cross at a cross walk and/or under adult supervision, like a school crossing guard. Don’t cross the street between parked cars.
  • Riding the bus – Always remain seated while the bus is moving, respect the driver, don’t yell or throw things.
  • Bicycling – Obey the rules of the road and be safe.

It only takes a few minutes to review back to school safety with your kids. By teaching our kids back to school safety habits, we can help keep them safe throughout the school year.
