Windshield Wiper Replacement

Windshield Wiper Replacement
It’s the time of year in southern California when we get the first “rain” of the season.  Before the rain gets here, check that your windshield wipers are working properly.  If your wipers leave big streaks across your windshield, then they need some servicing.

It’s not difficult to tell when your windshield wipers need some TLC.  Have you noticed any of the following issues?

  • Skipping – do your wipers struggle to complete a smooth pass across your windshield, skipping across it like a stone on a pond?
  • Streaking – does the dirt just streak across the glass leaving your visibility worse off than it was?
  • Splitting – do your wipers leave a split in the middle of the windshield between clean glass and streaks of dirt?
  • Squeaking – is it literally like fingernails on a chalkboard when you use your wipers?
  • Smearing – do your wipers just smear the water and dirt around the windshield without actually cleaning anything?
  • Chattering – does it sound like tiny feet tap dancing across your windshield when you run your wipers?

Service your windshield wipers before the weather takes an unexpected turn for the worse!  Don’t leave yourself without visibility when you drive.  Luckily, taking care of your wipers is pretty easy to do.

Tips for Maintaining Your Windshield Wiper Blades

Before you go out and spend money on brand new wipers, especially if the ones you have are less than six months old, try these tips to clean them up.

To clean your wipers:  Wet a clean cloth (or paper towel) with water and gently scrub it back and forth along the edge of the rubber blade.  Do this very gently so you don’t accidently tear the rubber and cause damage.  This will remove all the road grime that collects on your windshield as you drive and (hopefully) make your wipers more effective.

Speaking of road grime on your windshield…

Every time you gas up, clean your windshield.  The less junk they have to swipe, the longer your wipers will last!  Keeping your windshield clean will reduce the wear and tear on the soft rubber of your wipers.

Keep your wiper fluid full.  Another way to keep your windshield clean is to spray it with washer fluid and run the wipers.  If you don’t have any washer fluid, you’ll just get a squeaky, streaky mess!  Check your fluid levels and top it off if you need to.

Replacing Windshield Wipers

Windshield Wiper ReplacementEven if you regularly perform the windshield wiper maintenance above, you’re still going to need to replace your wipers at some point.  Experts agree that you should replace your windshield wipers every six months.

One of the reasons that people often hesitate to change out their wiper blades is because they don’t know what size they need for their car.  Luckily, there’s a way to figure it out without leaving the comfort of your own home!  Use this RainX Blade Size Finder to find the correct size blade for your car.
